Trevor attended the University of Chicago, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Political Science. Trevor received his law degree from the University of Minnesota, where he participated in the prosecution clinic as a certified student attorney.

After law school, Trevor served for four years in active duty with the United States Army as a Judge Advocate General (JAG). As a JAG officer, Trevor was a legal assistance attorney in preparing wills and answering legal questions for deploying soldiers and their families as the US military mobilized in the immediate period after 9/11.
